| Note |
Exact birth date - parish record Haselor Charles was born during the reign of William IV. A year later the king died. Melbourne was prime minister at the time of his birth. The Registration of Births Deaths And Marriages Act was passed. Four years after his birth in 1840 the' Penny Post' was introduced. Ten years after his birth, was the potato famine in Ireland. Charles Penn was a Stonemason and married Sophia Dyke on the 2nd December 1869 in St. Martins Parish Church, Birmingham . Their address when they were married was Hurst Street, Birmingham. On the 1871 census Charles and Sophia were shown living at 2 Keppel Row Windsor. Keppel Street still exists and was at one time a slum area. On the 1881 census their address is 28 Gardners Cottages, Clewer Windsor. This appears to have been a long street with numbers as high as 96. The 1910 Income Tax Register (aka as the Doomsday register) shows numbers 82-86 as being owned by 'Clewer Nursey'. These cottages were once owned by Conservative M P , R. Richardson-Gardner. (1874-1890) who it is alledged only rented to those who voted for him. Gardeners Cottages became Vansittart Street. At his death Charles is shown at 21a Alma Terrace and died in the presence of his son Alfred, whose address is shown as 4 Adelaide Square. If this was the home of Alfred, the family seems to have 'come up' in the world as this is an expensive area of Windsor. Data on www.familysearch.org leads me to believe that Charles Penn is the following. This information is interesting, but I don't have enough to trust it yet. Event(s): Birth: Christening: 13 OCT 1835 Binton, Warwick, England Death: Burial: Parents: Father: WILLIAM PENN Mother: LATITIA |
| Note | From www.familysearch.com I found a Charles Penn married to a Sophia Dyke Marriage: 02 DEC 1860 Saint Martin, Birmingham, Warwick, England No other dates were provided, but this would put Charles at 24 when married and at 38 when the twins John and George were born. |
