| Note |
Doris lived with her sister Elsie and grandparents in the Swan pub, Edenbridge, Kent after her mother died in the flu epidemic of the First World War. They both went to school in Edenbridge, but Doris eventually got a job working at Starborough Castle where it is believed she met and then married her first husband Mr Ernest Hughes in June 1931. He was a fishmonger who possibly delivered to the castle, and a picture of a 'Lady' by an Italian artist' now owned by Robin is believed to have come from there. Her father Frank Leonard died at the pub in October 1928 but Doris had left by then and was probably living in the Tonbridge area. At the time of her marriage to Hughes, she was a restaurant manageress in Tunbridge Wells - she liked to go to this area when she was married to Charles (The Pantiles & High Rocks) and also the Beckenham area and in particular Kelsey Park. Also nearby is Beckenham Park Golf Course where her and Charles would walk the dogs, possibly because all these locations were close to Shortlands where she spent her early childhood. Her address at the time of Robins birth, on the 26th February 1948, was 13 Addiscombe Avenue Croydon. She did not marry Charles until 17th September 1949 as her divorce from Hughes was not finalized until the 24th June 1948. |
